Westfall's bridge: from 'belonging in the group' to 'function and role within the group'
Mike identifies the precise logical move Westfall makes.
Westfall argues that different situations bring different identities into play, and the most important identity 'is directly related to the function and role that one has in that group.' Mike identifies this as the critical leap: sonship status (belonging) is being converted into function and role within the group. But sons can belong equally and still not all have the same functions. The key distinction: it is one thing to say everyone gets the benefits of sonship, and something else entirely to say within the group there are no distinctions regarding function and role related to gender.
