Can we anger God to the point where he will never forgive us?
Question from Dominique Cohn about whether God's anger can make him permanently withhold forgiveness.
Human unforgiveness rooted in anger ("I'm so angry I will never forgive you no matter what") has no parallel in God. Jesus on the cross prayed for his executioners' forgiveness. God sent his Son to a rebellious nation. When people are not forgiven, it is because they reject the forgiveness offered, not because God withholds it in anger. God does not delight in the death of the wicked (Ezek 18:23). His judgment is an expression of justice and goodness, not malicious anger. The terrifying truth is on the human side: our hearts can harden to the point where we will never accept forgiveness. God's heart is never the barrier.
