Melchizedek is a historical figure who typologically prefigures Christ as king-priest; the Melchizedekian order is non-genealogical and superior to the Levitical system.
Continued Q3 on the Melchizedekian priesthood.
Melchizedek appears in Genesis when Abraham returns from rescuing Lot; Abraham tithes a tenth of battle spoils to him, signifying Melchizedek's superiority over Abraham (and by extension, the Levitical system that descends from Abraham). Melchizedek is king of Salem (likely ancient Jerusalem), name means "king of righteousness," brings bread and wine. He is both king and priest — mirroring Christ. Hebrews uses him to argue Christ's priesthood is of a better order than the Law's priesthood. Psalm 110 prophesies a priest "after the order of Melchizedek" — Jesus is that priest. The order is typological/positional, not genealogical. Mike distinguishes this from LDS claims that their priesthood is Melchizedekian — he argues only Melchizedek and Jesus fit that designation. Mike also clarifies he does not believe Melchizedek is a Christophany.
