Re-baptism: Acts 19 supports being baptized again after receiving fuller gospel understanding; LDS baptism is invalid

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 26) 00:21:04 – 00:26:08

Q5 from Stephanie Morse: Are there biblical examples of people being baptized more than once? She was baptized LDS and wants to be re-baptized.

Winger examines Acts 19:1-7 where Paul encounters disciples in Ephesus who were only baptized into John's baptism and had not heard of the Holy Spirit. These were likely converts of Apollos, who initially preached only up to the baptism of John before being further instructed by Priscilla and Aquila. Paul explains John's baptism was preparatory; they then receive water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus, after which the Holy Spirit comes on them and they speak in tongues. Winger reads this as a case of re-baptism upon receiving fuller/correct theology. He applies this to Stephanie: the Acts 19 disciples had incomplete theology but not false theology, yet they were re-baptized. Since LDS baptism is into false theology (a false gospel and false Jesus), Winger says her re-baptism into the true Christ is even more clearly warranted and strongly recommended. Speaking in tongues here is confirmatory, not a universal requirement.
