God's forgetting of sins means he will not bring them up again, not literal amnesia — Christians cannot claim sinlessness post-forgiveness

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 26) 00:31:50 – 00:35:24

Q7 from Earl Grey: After forgiveness, sin is wiped clean — can a person claim to have never taken part in certain sins since the Lord remembers them no more?

Winger refutes a sermon he heard that taught Christians can literally forget sins because God forgets sins. Biblically, "God remembers no more" means he will not bring it up again, not punish you for it, not hold it over you — not that he literally has no knowledge of it. Similarly, OT prayers asking God to "remember" his people do not mean he had literally forgotten them; it is an idiom meaning "act on our behalf now." Christians cannot claim they never committed a sin they in fact committed. 1 John says if we claim we have not sinned we are liars. Claiming post-forgiveness sinlessness in personal relationships is manipulative and unbiblical. Forgiveness does not erase the historical fact of sin or remove all consequences; sometimes the regret of past sin is healthy because it fuels gratitude toward God for the gospel.
