John 21:24-25 does not support Orthodox/Catholic oral tradition

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 27) 00:23:32 – 00:27:06

Listener Adam Duarte's Orthodox friends cite John 21:24-25 as the Bible creating authoritative oral tradition.

John 21:24-25 says the beloved disciple wrote these things and there are many other things Jesus did that were not written down. Mike argues: (1) This passage is itself written inspired scripture, not oral tradition; (2) It simply acknowledges Jesus did more than what was recorded—this is obvious without needing Scripture to say it; (3) The verse does not establish that those unrecorded things were preserved by the Orthodox or Catholic church or are accessible today; (4) True oral tradition would require showing that unrecorded teachings of Jesus were transmitted separately from the NT epistles through specific tradition-holders. The early church distinguished between what came from apostles and what came from later development. Mike advises pressing these friends with questions rather than disputing directly.
