Mark 5 demoniac: Jesus was not tricked by the demons; the swine destruction may have been demonic sabotage that God repurposed for good.
Question 16 from Galushkin about whether Jesus or the demons were tricked in the Gerasene demoniac account.
Mike reads Mark 5:1-20. The demons ask to enter the pigs; Jesus grants permission; about 2000 pigs rush into the sea. Was someone tricked? Mike argues: (1) Jesus may have permitted something he did not prefer but allowed (God allows things he dislikes); (2) Demons' motive was likely to cause trouble for Jesus with the townspeople — and initially it worked (locals asked Jesus to leave); (3) Alternatively, demons may have entered pigs hoping to escape Jesus but the pigs could not swim; (4) The event ultimately served Jesus' purposes — demonstrated his power, created a witness (the healed man) who evangelized the region, and when Jesus returned the people ran to him. In Mark's narrative structure, Jesus is progressively shown conquering harder obstacles. This fits the pattern where Satan or demons intend harm and God repurposes it for good. The area was likely predominantly Gentile, indicating Jesus' outreach beyond Israel.
