Mark 11:11 — Jesus evaluating the temple fulfills Malachi 3:1 ("the Lord will suddenly come to his temple"). This is the culmination of Mark's opening quote and his subtle deity Christology.
Analysis of the brief but significant Mark 11:11
Jesus enters the temple, looks around at everything, and leaves — a brief evaluation that precedes the temple cleansing in Mark 11:15ff. Significance: (1) Mark's very first quote (Mark 1:2-3) cites Malachi 3:1: "I will send my messenger... and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple." In Malachi, it's Yahweh coming to his temple; in Mark, it's Jesus. This is Mark's characteristic subtle deity Christology — fusing Jesus' identity with God without confusing the persons. (2) Mark records only ONE trip to Jerusalem, making this temple visit even more dramatic — this IS the moment. (3) "Who can endure the day of his coming?" (Malachi 3:2) — the leaders think they're evaluating Jesus, but he's evaluating them. The temple cleansing follows as the judgment.
