The crowd's addition reveals their expectations: the son of David restoring Israel's political kingdom. The phrase "our father David" is unusual — the OT sometimes simply calls the Messiah "David" (Ezekiel prophesies "David will reign in Jerusalem," referring to the future Messiah). This is typological: David is a prototype of Christ, so the Messiah can be called by his name poetically. But the crowd's addition highlights the gap between expectation (political liberation) and reality (giving his life as a ransom). Application: just as the crowd misunderstood God's work, we may misunderstand what God is doing in our suffering — "If he can use the cross, he can use this."
