The Sanhedrin's three authority claims (succession from Moses, Moses's seat, oral tradition) are structurally identical to the Catholic magisterium's claims (apostolic succession, chair of Peter, sacred tradition).

Detailed parallel between Sanhedrin and Roman Catholic authority claims
Three parallel claims: (1) SUCCESSION: Sanhedrin claimed descent from Moses's 70 elders; the papacy claims apostolic succession from Peter through Linus to today. Both claims are historically unverifiable/false. Biblically, apostles appointed elders, not other apostles. (2) SEAT/CHAIR: Sanhedrin claimed Moses's seat (Matthew 23); the pope claims Peter's chair. Jesus affirmed they SAT in Moses's seat but interpreted this as responsibility, not authority — and rebuked them for adding traditions that conflict with Scripture (Mark 7:8-9). Catholic apologists cite Matthew 23 as support, but don't follow the parallel to Jesus's rebuke. (3) ORAL TRADITION: Sanhedrin claimed unwritten laws from Moses, provably not from Moses; Roman Catholicism claims sacred tradition from the apostles, but historical evidence shows key doctrines (papacy, Marian dogmas, sacramental theology) developed gradually, not originating with the apostles. The pope's authority structure: even if every bishop disagrees, if the pope proclaims dogma, it's binding. Eastern church split precisely because of these escalating claims.
