Jesus redirects from taxes to the image of God — you bear God's image, so you belong to God. For the Christian, there is no separation between religion and politics; being a Christian IS the lens through which you engage all of life.
The image of God as the foundational political principle
Jesus's answer moves from the lesser (Caesar's image on a coin) to the greater (God's image on humans). The principle: just as a coin bearing Caesar's image belongs to Caesar, a person bearing God's image belongs to God. This means the Christian's primary identity and loyalty is to God, which then informs every political engagement. There is no separation of religion and politics IN THE CHRISTIAN'S HEART — the separation is that politics has no authority over one's service to God, not that faith should be excluded from political thinking. "I want to be biblical in these issues... I'm worried that we're being formed by political parties more than our biblical commitments."
