Honor the office even when you despise the officeholder — "salute the rank, not the person." Christians who only honor leaders they agree with are operating from party affiliation, not biblical integrity.
Biblical principle of honoring government leaders regardless of party
Romans 13:7 says give honor to whom honor is due — this means honoring the president whether it's Trump, Obama, Biden, or Harris. "Salute the rank, not the person" — honor the God-established authority structure, not necessarily the individual's character. The test: Christians are very honoring when their preferred candidate is in office and dishonorable when the opposition wins — this reveals party affiliation, not biblical conviction. A consistent Christian honors the office regardless. 1 Peter 2:13: "Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human institution" — the key phrase is "for the Lord's sake." This also defines when to rebel: when obeying government means disobeying God. Otherwise, radical submission is the Christian norm.
