The veneer problem: leaders can portray a greater spirituality than they actually possess. Those who don't notice it reward it, installing fake spiritual leaders who install more. Character must trump stage skills in leadership selection.
The danger of rewarding veneer over substance in church leadership
The dynamic: genuine, godly servants who lack "veneer" get passed over while those with impressive appearances but less substance get promoted. Those inauthentic leaders have the same blind spots, so they install more like themselves. The NT qualifications for leadership are CHARACTER traits (read the epistles), not stage skills. Being "good on stage" is not a NT requirement. Pastors must not disassociate from their people so all anyone sees is the veneer — they need close friends who will hold them accountable, not yesmen. Winger's self-application: "Watch out that you won't become one. You like the greetings. You like the attention. I should be scared of that stuff."
