Mark 13:5-13 lists things that are NOT signs of Jesus's second coming — wars, earthquakes, pandemics, famines. Jesus is expressly warning against premature messianic expectations, but Christians consistently misuse these verses as signs.
Introduction to Mark 13:1-13 on things that are NOT signs of the end
Mark 13 is Jesus's "little apocalypse." Three views: (1) all about 70 AD only; (2) all about the far future only; (3) Winger's view: about BOTH the temple destruction and the second coming, with visible breaks in the text. The key problem: Christians have taken Jesus's explicit warnings ("these things must take place but that is NOT YET the end") and turned them into the very predictions Jesus was warning against. Winger predicts this will get much worse around 2028-2033 as we approach 2000 years from Jesus's ministry, crucifixion, and Pentecost.
