How Paul IS different from his culture (complementarian distinctives)

Have We Misunderstood "Wives Submit"? Women in Ministry part 9 02:28:33 – 02:30:05

Mike distinguishes Paul's teaching from both Roman culture and egalitarianism.

Paul is genuinely different from Roman culture in four ways: (1) He emphasizes love far more, with an incredibly high standard (love as your own body, self-sacrificially, as Christ loved the church). (2) He never tells husbands to force their wives to submit -- it's not the husband's job to enforce submission. (3) Everything is framed as 'all about Christ' -- wife submits as unto Christ, husband loves as Christ loved the church, providing permanent motivation. (4) Paul addresses each role only to the person in that role, not instructing men on what women should do.
