Titus 2 as test case: 'that the word of God may not be reviled' doesn't make things merely cultural
Mike provides extended analysis of whether evangelistic purpose equals cultural binding.
Titus 2:1-10 lists many behaviors with the qualifier 'that the word of God may not be reviled.' If submission is 'just cultural' because of this qualifier, then the entire list must be: being sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, reverent in behavior, not slandering, not drunk, loving husbands and children, being kind, having integrity, sound speech. Obviously these aren't merely cultural. The same qualifier also applies to Titus' own teaching (v.8: 'so that an opponent may be put to shame'). You can't extract one item (submission) and call it cultural while treating the rest as transcultural.
