Internal contradiction in egalitarian interpretations: mutual submission AND cultural binding cannot both be true
Mike identifies a fundamental tension in the egalitarian case.
Egalitarians sometimes claim Ephesians 5 teaches mutual submission (transcultural equality) and other times claim it teaches authority imbalance that is culturally bound (like slavery). These two positions cannot both be true. Keener seems to hold both views, possibly resolving it through the dual-messaging theory (Christians read mutual submission, Romans read patriarchy).
