Philip Payne similarly states that 'Miriam the prophetess is sent by God to lead Israel.' Mike notes that both Belleville and Payne are bedrock egalitarian scholars whom everyone else quotes, yet they recklessly handle the text. The word 'sent before' does not exactly mean 'lead' — it is a much softer term. Miriam had some relation to leading, but not what Belleville and Payne claim.
