Women served as priests in other ancient pagan nations, but were explicitly forbidden under the Law from being priests in Israel. The complementarian view: the highest spiritual authority role/office was kept for men, and the NT continues this with women not being elders (even though all believers are priests). Egalitarians offer two alternate explanations.
