John 10:27-28

John 10:27-28 — "My sheep hear My voice"

Text (NASB)

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand."

Analysis: Do the sheep choose to follow?

The Calvinist reading treats "My sheep" as a fixed, predetermined group — those unconditionally elected before the foundation of the world. On this view, they hear and follow because they were pre-selected to do so. But Cheryl Schatz demonstrates that Jesus' teaching throughout John presents a different picture: God prepares people through teaching, and those who respond to the Father's revelation are then given to the Son.

The sequence in John's Gospel

John 6:45 (NASB): "It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught of God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me."

The process: (1) God teaches all, (2) some hear and learn, (3) those who learn come to Jesus. The "hearing and learning" is an active response, not a passive reception of irresistible grace. Schatz connects this to Malachi 3:16-18: those who feared the LORD and esteemed His name are identified as "My own possession." God's eye is on those who fear Him (Ps 33:18), and He gives them to the Son.

"Hear" (ἀκούω) implies active response

In John 10:27, "hear" (ἀκούω) carries the sense of "listen to, heed, obey" — not merely auditory perception. The sheep actively hear, and they actively follow. The present tense of both verbs indicates ongoing, continuous action. The sheep are characterized by their continued response to the Shepherd's voice, not by a one-time decree that determined their identity.

Security of the believer

Verses 28-29 ("no one will snatch them out of My hand") describe the security of those who are following Christ. The promise is that no external force can separate the believing sheep from Christ. This is a promise about the Shepherd's keeping power, not about the impossibility of a sheep choosing to wander. The security is real and robust — but it is a security for those who are hearing and following (present tense, ongoing).

Schatz's argument from Deuteronomy and Joshua

God initiates by teaching, revealing, and calling. Responding to God's call does not make the sheep the "chooser of the Shepherd" — it makes them responsive to God's initiative. Deuteronomy 30:19 ("choose life") and Joshua 24:15 ("choose for yourselves today whom you will serve") show God presenting a genuine choice. God initiated the choice; responding to it does not usurp God's sovereignty.

Summary: "My sheep" is a fixed group predetermined by God. They hear and follow because God irresistibly causes them to do so. The passage proves unconditional election: the sheep were chosen before they heard, and their hearing is the result (not the cause) of their election.
