Mike clarifies: 1 Timothy 3:8-13 is NOT about females being deacons per se — it's all about men except verse 11. Verse 11 shows women had some counterpart role doing deacon-type ministries. Key evidence: no qualifications exist for elders' wives in the earlier passage, but there ARE qualifications for deacons' female counterparts. The word 'wives' (gynaikas) probably means 'women' not 'wives.' These women have qualifications because they're doing deacon-type stuff.
