Egalitarian scholars' classifications of authenteo meanings

ALL The Debates Over 1 Tim 2_11-15: Women in Ministry part 12 (it took me a year to make this) 05:10:00 – 05:25:00

Mike examines how egalitarian scholars categorize the various proposed meanings.

Leland Wilshire conducted a major study cataloging uses of authenteo and its cognates, identifying meanings including: 'to rule, to reign sovereignly,' 'to control, to dominate,' 'to act independently,' 'to exercise one's own jurisdiction,' 'to be primarily responsible for,' 'to commit murder,' 'to be the author/originator.' Cynthia Long Westfall and Linda Belleville emphasize the negative end of this spectrum. Mike argues that when you remove Atticist texts and Classical-era uses, and focus only on Koine-era, non-literary texts, the meanings cluster around neutral authority. Even Wilshire's own data, properly filtered, supports the complementarian reading.
