Al Wolters' definitive analysis of authenteo evidence

ALL The Debates Over 1 Tim 2_11-15: Women in Ministry part 12 (it took me a year to make this) 05:25:00 – 05:40:00

Mike presents Wolters' careful filtering of the evidence for authenteo's meaning.

Al Wolters published what Mike considers the most careful analysis of authenteo. Wolters: (1) Separated Atticist literary uses from common Koine uses; (2) Demonstrated that negative meanings (murder, sexual aggression) appear only in Classical/Atticist contexts; (3) Showed that in non-Atticist Koine texts from the NT era, the word consistently means 'to have authority' or 'to exercise authority'; (4) Argued that the verbal form authentein in 1 Tim 2:12 fits naturally with the Koine meaning of 'exercise authority'; (5) Concluded that translating it as 'have authority' or 'exercise authority' is well supported. Mike considers this the most rigorous treatment of the evidence.
