Matthew 10:23 — 'Son of Man coming' refers to Jesus arriving in the towns during the limited sending mission, not the second coming

Why Jesus Was NOT A Failed Apocalyptic Prophet 00:56:35 – 01:00:10

Mike addresses the specific verse R.C. Sproul cites as evidence for an expected first-century return.

Matthew 10:23: 'you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.' In context (Matt 10:5-11:1), Jesus sends the Twelve two-by-two only to Israel (not Gentiles), tells them to move on if rejected, and 'I am sending you out as sheep among wolves.' The 'Son of Man coming' is simply Jesus himself following behind his disciples into the same towns — as confirmed by Matthew 11:1, where after finishing the instructions he 'went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.' The whole passage is about a short-duration, local, first-coming mission trip, not the eschatological return.
