Jesus's own words affirm future divine vengeance and judgment — directly refuting Zahnd's 'Jesus closes the book on vengeance' thesis
Winger compiles multiple Gospel and Pauline texts that show Jesus and the New Testament affirming coming divine judgment.
1 Thessalonians 1:6–10 (Paul): When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven 'in flaming fire inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel,' they 'will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction.' 2 Thessalonians 1 context makes clear this is Christ's return. Luke 11:32: Jesus tells the cities he has preached in that 'the men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it.' Luke 13:1–5: Jesus tells the crowds twice 'unless you repent, you will all likewise perish' — not because those who died were worse sinners, but because all need repentance before coming judgment. Luke 21:22: Jesus calls the coming destruction 'days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.' Revelation 19:11: Christ returns on a white horse, 'in righteousness he judges and makes war.' Winger argues these texts show that Zahnd's Jesus — who never threatens, never judges, and only extends unconditional love — is a fabrication. The real Jesus taught both radical grace and real coming judgment.
