Isaiah 52:13-53:12 as messianic prophecy — full reading
McLatchie reads and introduces the Suffering Servant passage of Isaiah 53 as the premier example of messianic prophecy.
Isaiah 52:13-53:12 describes a servant who: is marred beyond human semblance, is despised and rejected, bears the griefs and sorrows of others, is pierced for transgressions and crushed for iniquities, is led like a lamb to slaughter, makes his grave with the wicked and with a rich man, and whose soul becomes a guilt offering. Written approximately 700 years before Christ. McLatchie notes the servant sprinkles "the nations" (not just Israel) — pointing to a priestly capacity extended to the Gentiles. The passage directly parallels the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
