Undesigned coincidence: why Jesus addressed Philip at the feeding of the 5,000

A Bunch Of Reasons Christianity Is True: special guest Jonathan McLatchie 00:45:12 – 00:48:16

McLatchie's first example of an undesigned coincidence involving John 6, John 12, and Luke 9.

John 6:5 — Jesus asks Philip specifically where to buy bread for the crowd. No reason is given. John 12:21 (six chapters later, different Passover) — we learn incidentally that Philip is from Bethsaida. Luke 9:10 — narrates the same feeding of the 5,000 and mentions it took place at Bethsaida, but does not mention Jesus asking Philip. When pieces are combined: Jesus turned to Philip because Philip was a local from Bethsaida — he would know where to buy bread. This cogent explanation emerges only when three separate passages across two Gospels are combined. This interlocking is precisely what we'd expect if the accounts reflect genuine historical knowledge rather than invention.
