Irreconcilable variation in empty tomb accounts — evidence for independence

A Bunch Of Reasons Christianity Is True: special guest Jonathan McLatchie 01:51:28 – 01:54:07

McLatchie presents apparent discrepancies between Gospel accounts of the empty tomb as evidence for their independence.

Mark 16:1 names three women (Mary Magdalene, Mary mother of James, Salome) going to the tomb. Matthew 28:1 names two (Mary Magdalene and the other Mary). Luke 24:10 names Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary mother of James, and others. John 20:1 mentions only Mary Magdalene arriving. At first this seems contradictory — was it one woman or several? But John 20:2 reveals the answer: Mary uses the plural "we do not know where they have laid him," showing she knew others were present. John is aware of other women but focuses on Mary. These apparent discrepancies, upon closer examination, resolve into a coherent picture while pointing to the independence of the accounts — independent testimony is stronger than coordinated testimony.
