Purpose of a church service — discipleship vs. evangelism balance

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 8) Fixed and Reuploaded 00:40:46 – 00:43:00

Q from Austin Hallman about whether church services should be primarily for believers or inclusive of the unsaved.

Mike says the church's purpose includes both evangelism and discipleship. The emphasis should be calibrated to the makeup of the congregation: if the majority are believers, focus on discipleship; if the majority are unbelievers, focus on evangelism. For most churches, Sunday morning should lean toward discipleship. However, Mike argues the best practical way to drive evangelism from a Sunday service is not by telling people to invite others, but by teaching in a way so compelling that congregants naturally want to bring their unsaved friends and family. This means always teaching with gospel salt in the message.

Eph 5:22 and Mutual Submission
