The Message Bible — not a legitimate translation; unfaithful to the original languages; should not be recommended

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 9) 00:57:13 – 00:58:44

Question from Jonathan Edwards about recommending The Message Bible.

Mike strongly disapproves of The Message Bible. It is an extreme paraphrase using 1950s–1960s American colloquialisms rather than faithful translation. Even its creator, Eugene Peterson, said it should not be used as a primary Bible. Its popularity arose from publishers and public demand for easy reading over accuracy. Mike prefers accurate-but-demanding over cute-but-unfaithful. He would rather people read the ESV or NASB. He notes even King James Only advocates dislike him, positioning himself as holding a nuanced pro-accuracy view across translations.
