Government paganism does not nullify Christian obligation to submit to civil authority

The early church faced Caesar worship and official Roman paganism without adopting a posture of wholesale rebellion. Jesus told Peter to put away his sword. His kingdom is not of this world. Christians should not interpret government wickedness as permission to ignore all civil authority. If in Congress, the appropriate response is to personally and publicly reject the prayer and identify as a Christian — but not to abandon the civic role.
