Question: What happens to animals and insects when they die?

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 23) 00:37:04 – 00:38:36

Viewer Samantha Hott asks whether animals and insects have souls and what becomes of them at death.

Mike's initial reaction: animals probably just cease to exist — they may have souls (a life-force) but those souls do not persist after death. The problem with animal afterlife is especially acute for insects: the sheer quantity that have ever lived would make any sort of resurrection/new-creation ecology overwhelming. He also notes the continuum problem: plants are alive — do they have persistent souls? Then insects, then intelligent animals (chimpanzees, dolphins, elephants).
