Ecclesiastes passage differentiating the spirit of animals (returns to dust) from the spirit of humans (returns to God)

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 23) 00:38:36 – 00:39:40

The only biblical text Mike can identify that directly addresses the distinction between animal and human souls at death.

Mike cites a passage in Ecclesiastes (likely Eccl 3:21 or 12:7) that differentiates the soul/spirit of animals, which returns to the dust, from the soul/spirit of humans, which returns to God who gave it. He acknowledges Ecclesiastes is highly poetic and people may push back on this reading, but for now it is his closest biblical anchor for the view that animals do not have an eternal soul.
