Unconfessed sin at death — positional vs. conditional righteousness; in Christ theology

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 24) 00:44:07 – 00:48:40

Popham asks if a born-again Christian who dies suddenly with an unconfessed momentary sin (not a lifestyle) goes to hell.

Mike reframes: Christ covers people, not just sins. The key question is whether someone is truly in Christ. Extended reading of Ephesians 1: chosen in him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless; predestined for adoption as sons; redemption through his blood; sealed with the Holy Spirit as guarantee of inheritance. The phrase in him is repeated throughout — this is positional righteousness, not conditional righteousness. My condition does not always reflect holiness; my position before God in Christ is holy and blameless. Being in Christ means one cannot be finally condemned — not because one is sinless but because one is united with Christ. Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me. A Christian who dies in a momentary act of sin goes to heaven.
