How to evaluate scholarship that challenges traditional OT interpretation through cultural/linguistic arguments

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 29) 01:13:23 – 01:16:54

Question from True West about scholarship that challenges OT translations and cultural understandings.

Scholarship is a "mixed bag." The danger is that most listeners cannot independently verify claims made in original languages or ancient culture, so they extend trust. Good scholarship (e.g., knowing that Paul's reference in Galatians to not seeking to be uncircumcised refers to an actual Greco-Roman surgical reversal procedure; knowing that reclining at Passover was culturally normative, which refutes claims of romantic intimacy between John and Jesus) genuinely illuminates the text. Bad scholarship uses scholarly prestige to deceive people about Scripture. Winger's practical counsel: find teachers you can trust; when in doubt, simply read your Bible — direct reading beats trusting a single scholar blindly. Teachers are judged more strictly (Jas 3:1) because they bear responsibility for others' resulting beliefs and behavior.
