Eldership as necessary but not sufficient condition of being in Christ
Mike uses logical categories to analyze the relationship between sonship and eldership.
Westfall says being justified and putting on Christ at baptism entails 'all the benefits of membership.' Mike agrees. But is eldership one of the benefits of membership? Mike argues no: being a Christian is necessary to be an elder, but it is not sufficient — not every Christian is automatically qualified to be an elder. Unless you can say every Christian is automatically an elder simply by being in Christ, the bridge from sonship to eldership does not hold.
