Solomon's inauguration on a donkey (1 Kings 1) and Genesis 49:10-11 provide additional donkey-messiah connections that Zechariah 9:9 likely draws from.

Additional OT background on donkey symbolism

Solomon — the original "son of David" and prototype of the ultimate son of David — entered as king on a donkey (1 Kings 1). Jesus has just been publicly called "son of David" in Mark 10, making this connection intentional. Genesis 49:10-11 prophesies a ruler from Judah: "The scepter shall not depart from Judah... until Shiloh comes... He ties his foal to the vine." Many commentators believe Zechariah 9:9 draws on this Genesis passage. The "blood of grapes" in Genesis 49:11 may reference both trampling enemies (second coming) and Christ's own sacrificial blood (communion). The OT has a broader prophetic pattern of scorning war horses: Psalm 20:7, Isaiah 2:7, Isaiah 31:1, Micah 5:10, Haggai 2:22.
