The hairstyle view: Philip Payne's interpretation of 1 Corinthians 11

All The Head Covering Debates (1 Cor 11): Women in Ministry part 10 00:47:29 – 00:50:01

Mike presents the second of five interpretive approaches.

Philip Payne promotes the 'hair done up' view: 1 Corinthians 11 is not about cloth coverings but hairstyles. For men, 'covering' means long hair (keep it short). For women, 'covering' means hair done up in a bun or wrapped. Headship (kephale) in verse 3 means only 'source,' not authority. Verses 4-6 are about sexual immorality: men with long hair signals effeminacy/homosexuality; women with hair hanging loose signals sexual freedom. Paul is being sensitive to crudeness by not spelling out the sexual content.
