Question 12: What does 'because of the angels' mean? Four views evaluated

All The Head Covering Debates (1 Cor 11): Women in Ministry part 10 05:00:52 – 05:06:02

Mike evaluates the four main interpretive options for this phrase.

View 1 (human messengers): angelos can mean human messenger, but Paul uses it three other times in 1 Corinthians (4:9, 6:3, 13:1) always meaning angelic beings. No qualifier in v.10 suggests otherwise. View fails. View 2 (lustful angels): based on Genesis 6:2 and 1 Peter. But nothing in the passage mentions lust; Paul's concerns are honor/dishonor/headship. Head coverings can't prevent angelic lust. Paul only requires coverings during prayer/prophecy, not all the time. View 3 (holy angelic observers): angels present during worship want to see God's order displayed. Supported by 1 Timothy 5:21, Ephesians 3:10, OT tabernacle imagery. Fits the worship context. View 4 (angels women will judge): based on 1 Corinthians 6:3 but requires the woman-has-authority reading of v.10, which Mike rejects.
