1 Timothy 5:21

1 Timothy 5:21 — Leaders Must Be Without Bias or Partiality

"I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality" (NASB).

The Charge Against Prejudgment

Paul charges Timothy — with the highest possible solemnity ("in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels") — to maintain his principles without bias and to do nothing in a spirit of partiality. This is not a casual instruction; it is a solemn oath binding Timothy to impartial leadership.

Egalitarian Significance

CS identifies the egalitarian force of this verse: leaders in the church are explicitly commanded to operate without bias and partiality. If church leaders exclude women from teaching or leadership roles based on gender alone — rather than on the basis of individual calling, gifting, and faithfulness — they violate Paul's own command to Timothy. Gender-based exclusion from ministry is, by definition, partiality: treating a class of people differently not based on their actions or character but based on an immutable characteristic.

The irony is that this verse appears in the same letter that complementarians cite as prohibiting women from teaching. Paul's command to Timothy to be impartial sits in tension with any reading of 2:12 that establishes a permanent, gender-based exclusion. The egalitarian reading of 2:12 (a specific woman stopped from specific false teaching) is consistent with 5:21's demand for impartiality. The complementarian reading (all women excluded from teaching) creates an internal contradiction within the same letter.

Cross-References

  • James 2:1-9 — "Do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism." Partiality based on class or status is condemned; gender-based partiality fits the same pattern.
  • Proverbs 18:17 — "The first to plead his case seems right, until another comes and examines him." Both sides deserve a fair hearing.
  • Acts 10:34-35 — "God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him."
