Revelation 2:20

Revelation 2:20 — Jezebel: Gender Is Not the Issue

Jesus rebukes Thyatira for tolerating "the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches (didasko) and leads My bond-servants astray." Two critical observations:

  1. Didasko is again used for false teaching without qualification.
  2. Jesus does not rebuke the church for having a woman teach. The problem is not her gender but her content — she teaches error and leads people into immorality.

This is an important parallel to 1 Timothy 2:12. God does gift women as prophetesses (Acts 21:9; Deborah). The Jezebel figure is condemned for false doctrine, not for being female. If the problem in 1 Timothy 2:12 were simply that a woman was teaching men, Jesus would have rebuked Jezebel on that basis as well — but he did not.

Cross-References for Revelation 2:20

  • 1 Timothy 2:12 — Both passages involve a woman teaching error. In neither case is gender identified as the actual problem.
  • Acts 21:9 — Philip's four prophesying daughters show God does gift women for public ministry.
  • Revelation 2:14 — Parallel use of didasko for false teaching (Balaam), establishing the pattern.
