Verse-by-verse: v. 8 — love never ends; three gifts (prophecy, knowledge, tongues) will pass away; the context is clearly the spiritual gifts of 1 Cor 12-14.

Does This Verse Teach Cessationism? And a Bit On Bethel. 1 Cor 13_10-12 00:20:30 – 00:22:35

Winger begins his own positive verse-by-verse treatment of 1 Cor 13:8-13.

Love is the central, permanent value — it never ends. Prophecy, knowledge, and tongues are temporary gifts that will cease. Paul uses slightly different Greek constructions for tongues vs. prophecy/knowledge ("cease" vs. "pass away"), though Winger says little theological weight can be placed on this distinction. The gift of knowledge (charismatic divine knowledge/revelation) is distinct from knowledge in general; the former will cease, not all human knowledge.
