The NT reliably narrates events where Jesus was alone — he could have told disciples, and Holy Spirit aided gospel authors
Q19 from Stephen Richeson: How do we know the NT is reliable for events where Jesus was alone, such as the temptation in the wilderness or Gethsemane?
Winger offers two explanations. Natural explanation: Jesus could simply have told his disciples what happened in the wilderness or at Gethsemane. People regularly know about events that happened to others alone because those people reported them. For Gethsemane specifically, Jesus brought Peter, James, and John close — they may have been near enough to hear him praying in agony. Supernatural explanation: the Holy Spirit inspired the gospel authors. Jesus promised the disciples that the Spirit would bring to remembrance everything he told them (John 14:26). Winger prefers the natural explanation as the first resort and does not leap immediately to "the Spirit just revealed it." Both explanations are valid and complementary.
