Greek katakalupto: never used for hair in ancient Greek, always refers to cloth covering
Mike presents the strongest Greek evidence for cloth coverings.
Paul uses katakalupto (to cover) three times in vv.6-7. Preston Massie: 'katakalupto is never used in ancient Greek to describe the covering of either a man's or woman's head with hair.' BDAG says it refers to cloth coverings. Related cognates in vv.5 and 13 also suggest cloth. The Septuagint uses this term for cloth covering in Genesis 38:15 (Tamar covering her face with cloth) -- the only OT use of the term for a human.
