Esther 1:20-22

The only "law" in the Bible that explicitly commands male domestic rule comes from a pagan Persian king — Ahasuerus, who decreed "that every man should be the master in his own house" (v.22). This decree was issued because Queen Vashti refused to parade her beauty before drunken partygoers. The law was the product of a drunk king's wounded pride, advised by courtiers who feared their own wives would follow Vashti's example. This is descriptive, not prescriptive — the Bible records this pagan law, it does not endorse it. Any theology that makes the husband "master of the home by law" is borrowing from Ahasuerus, not from God. God's design for marriage is mutual submission (Eph 5:21), mutual authority (1 Cor 7:4), and mutual honor (1 Pet 3:7).

Summary: When complementarians enforce male domestic headship, the biblical parallel is not Eden or Ephesians 5 — it is Esther 1:22, a decree issued by a drunk pagan king to preserve male ego. This is the company kept by those who demand male domestic authority by law rather than earning it through Christlike self-sacrifice.
