1 Corinthians 14:23-25

Paul envisions a scenario where "all prophesy" (pantes prophēteuōsin) and an unbeliever enters — he is convicted by all, called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and he falls on his face declaring "God is certainly among you" (vv.24-25). The word "all" is unrestricted — Paul does not say "all men prophesy." The evangelistic power of the gathered church depends on the full participation of all Spirit-gifted members. Restricting women from prophesying would diminish the very witness Paul describes. This passage stands in direct tension with any reading of vv.34-35 as a universal silencing of women — Paul cannot command "all prophesy" and then forbid half the congregation from doing so.

Greek Analysis — 1 Corinthians 14:23-25

Key Terms

  • πάντες (pantes) — "all." Used twice in this passage: "if all speak in tongues" (v.23) and "if all prophesy" (v.24). The adjective pantes is unqualified and unrestricted — it envisions a scenario where every member of the assembly prophesies. Since Paul has already established that women prophesy (11:5), pantes necessarily includes women.

  • προφητεύωσιν (prophēteuōsin) — "they prophesy" (v.24, present active subjunctive). The subjunctive mood indicates a real possibility, not a hypothetical absurdity. Paul presents "all prophesying" as a genuinely desirable scenario that would produce conviction in unbelievers.

  • ἐλέγχεται (elenchetai) — "he is convicted" (v.24). When all prophesy, the unbeliever is convicted — the verb elenchō means to expose, reprove, convict of wrongdoing. This is authoritative, confrontational speech that produces moral and spiritual conviction. If women participate in this "all prophesy" scenario (which pantes demands), then women exercise convicting, authoritative speech over men — including male unbelievers.

  • ἀνακρίνεται (anakrinetai) — "he is examined, called to account" (v.24). In addition to conviction, the unbeliever is examined by the prophetic speech. Anakrinō is a judicial term — it means to investigate, interrogate, hold to account. Prophecy by all members (including women) exercises judicial-level authority over the hearers.

  • τὰ κρυπτὰ τῆς καρδίας (ta krypta tēs kardias) — "the hidden things of the heart" (v.25). Prophecy exposes hidden things — it penetrates to the inner person. This is the most authoritative form of speech imaginable: Spirit-empowered revelation that lays bare the human heart. And Paul envisions all doing it.

WIM Significance

1 Corinthians 14:23-25 presents Paul's ideal worship scenario: the entire assembly prophesying, producing conviction and conversion in outsiders. The universal pantes ("all") combined with the established reality of women prophesying (11:5) means Paul envisions women exercising convicting, examining, heart-exposing speech in the assembly. Any reading of 14:34-35 that silences women entirely contradicts this passage — which is only nine verses earlier in the same chapter. This is one of the strongest internal arguments that 14:34-35 cannot mean a universal silence ban on women.
