1 Timothy 1:19-20
1 Timothy 1:19-20 — The Deliberate Deceivers: A Contrast
Hymenaeus and Alexander rejected faith and a good conscience, suffering "shipwreck" in their faith. Paul handed them over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. This is the harshest disciplinary action in the letter.
The significance for interpreting 2:11-15 is the contrast: the woman in 2:12 does not receive this treatment. She is not handed over to Satan. Instead, she is stopped from teaching, commanded to learn, and promised salvation. This distinction proves Paul saw her as deceived (like his former self) rather than deliberately destructive (like Hymenaeus and Alexander). Paul operated on a spectrum of responses to false teaching — from compassionate correction to excommunication — based on the teacher's culpability.
Cross-References for 1 Timothy 1:19-20

- 1 Timothy 1:13-16 — Paul's own experience shows the mercy available to the ignorant, contrasted with the discipline for the deliberate.
